If your cat is like most of our feline patients, she’s probably less than thrilled about coming to visit us. Most kitties would much rather take another snooze than be subjected to the humiliation of being put into a carrier and then taken on a car ride. The indignity! Of course, no matter what Fluffy thinks about the matter, she’ll be happier and healthier with proper veterinary care. A Bellaire, TX vet discusses bringing your furry pal to the vet in this article.
We recommend that all cats be fixed, microchipped, and kept current on exams, vaccines, and parasite control. Keep up with Fluffy’s veterinary care needs!
How often should we see Fluffy? Well, that ultimately depends on her age, health, and lifestyle. If your furball is still a kitten, she’ll need to visit us a few times in that first year. Adult cats that stay indoors may only need annual visits. Senior cats may benefit from more frequent appointments, as will cats that are allowed to roam outside. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.
No matter how old your furry buddy is, you’ll need to watch for potential signs of illness. Some of these may include reduced appetite, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, unkempt fur, hiding, respiratory issues, discharge, and uncharacteristic behavior. Cats instinctively try to hide signs of sickness, so contact your vet immediately if you notice any of these.
Even if your kitty is one of the few felines that doesn’t mind car rides, she should still be crated for travel. It’s much too dangerous to let pets loose in the car! Fluffy could get under your feet or in your lap, and interfere with your driving. To make the carrier as comfortable, add some soft bedding, catnip, and toys.
Try to avoid sharp turns and/or sudden stops and starts. Having air flowing through the car can help keep Fluffy from getting carsick, so turn on the AC or crack a window. You may also want to play the radio, so your kitty has something to meow along with.
Your vet can be a fountain of knowledge about your kitty’s care and behavior. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice and care tips. That’s what we’re here for!
