That’s the thinking behind the World’s Largest Pet Walk, which takes place on the 23rd this year. A local Bellaire, TX vet offers some insight into this national event below.

What It Is

This is a charity event, aimed at shining light on the special bond we share with our furry friends, and spreading recognition of the difference it can make in people’s lives. The event was started back in the 1970’s by a group of visionaries and veterinarians. They saw the way pets improved their humans’ mental health, and wanted to spread awareness about the positive impact our animal companions can have on our lives. The event has continued to grow year over year. Today, many large corporations are onboard as sponsors. That list includes Spectrum, Elanco, and Purina, to name just a few. 

The Event

So how does one celebrate the World’s Largest Pet Walk? By walking your dog, of course. You can take Fido out by yourself, or meet up with family or friends. Of course, if you have a cat that enjoys going for strolls and is already trained to walk on a harness, Fluffy is also welcome to participate! 

The Cause

This event isn’t just an awareness day. The organization offers courses and education on a variety of topics, from canine body language to infection prevention and control. They also help organize bringing therapy pets to soothe and cheer seniors, hospital patients, and veterans. 

Why Walk?

You don’t need a special event to take your canine friend for a stroll. Those daily walks provide Fido with exercise and stimulation, which are both key to keeping him happy, healthy, and fit. Just play it safe: keep your pooch leashed, and stick to safe areas.
